“Michi-no-Eki” (government-designated roadside rest areas) are hubs for road trips, offering 本地 farm produce and souvenirs. Spurred by ministry initiatives, they have upgraded their checkouts. We list the major 支付 accepted.
Accepted 支付 at Roadside Stations
1. Credit Cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB)
Virtually all central 現金 registers at souvenir halls and 餐廳 接受 cards. Ideal for buying premium 地方 items or 本地 牛肉.
2. E-Money (Suica, iD, WAON, nanaco)
Commonly accepted at farm direct produce lanes and ticket-operated food courts. WAON enjoys high acceptance in regions close to Aeon distribution hubs.
3. QR Code 支付 (PayPay, Rakuten Pay, d払い)
The most versatile option, frequently accepted even at outdoor ice cream 攤販 and individual grower 攤販.
Watch Out for Outdoor Kiosks & Vending Machines
While central registers are modern, independent food 攤販 on the patio or legacy beverage vending machines often remain 現金-only. Keep some coins handy.
